Bhopal is not only known as the repository of important institutions that are in turn considered to be the significant ones with national importance, but also known for being the dormitory for the enormous gas tragedy that had happened in the country, till date.
It is one of the greenest capital cities in the country and is well known for its abundant natural resources, especially the lakes. But the Bhopal gas tragedy had made the capital city to suffer many campaigns and protestations, till date. It houses the state legislative assembly, which is called as the Vidhan Sabha, which has the capability of 230 seats of legislative assembly.
Bhopal Tragedy
Nobody would have ever forgotten the worst industrial tragedy that had happened till date in Bhopal in the year 1984, due to the poisonous gas leaked from the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) pesticide plant. Around 32 tons of poisonous gas leaked from the plant, including the methy isocyanate gas, which had caused the death toll to increase up to 8000 with more causalities reported till date, due to the diseases that were caused due to the poisonous gas leakage. The government did compensate the affected people with facilities like food, money and housing facilities, etc… but the worst part is that, still majority of the victims didn’t receive the justice. Many political and regional parties have swallowed the allotted government funds, leaving the victims in the worst living conditions. This infamous incident had made Bhopal to get laid back in its economic growth for a long time. But, at the same time, this also necessitated the demand for more secured and developed industries and commercial institutions in Bhopal.
Economy
Bhopal, being the capital city of the state Madhya Pradesh, is known for its flourishing industrial/commercial city namely, ‘Govindpura’, which in turn has got many small and medium scale industries that are involved in many production activities, accounting to more than 1000 industries on the whole. Further, the other major commercial areas/suburbs called as, Maharana Pratap Nagar, Mandideep, Old city, and Bairagarh, etc… are known for their flourishing business houses, banks, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and movie halls, etc… Bhopal is in fact an important economic, industrial, commercial, and education center of the state and it houses some of the significant institutions of the country like, ISRO’s Master Control facility, Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, and many more of this sort.
Education
Of course, Bhopal has rich abundant educational resource, which comprises of engineering colleges, accounting to around 90, CBSE affiliated schools, government schools, accounting to around 150 schools, medical colleges/universities, management schools, law schools, and other higher studies related universities/colleges. The National Law Institute University is one of the premier law schools in the country. It also have schools that are affiliated in turn to the National Institute of Open Schooling. Further, the ‘Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology’, which was established in the year 1960 is considered to one of the oldest, premier institute of technology in the city and it is also considered by the Indian government as an institute of national importance.
